Ah, Youtube. Home of the weird, wild and occasionally the wonderful. Much like university in fact. 

There are countless guides to help students pick the best universities, but (alarmingly) there are very few rundowns of the best videos on Youtube for students. Wouldn’t it be informative and interesting to have a list of, say, I don’t know, 10 of the best Youtube videos for students? It would? Then rejoice and read on, for here’s the top 10 (in no particular order). Honestly, we spoil you sometimes. 

1.) George Bush dodges shoes

What could be more jolly than slinging your sweaty Hush Puppies at the world’s most powerful man? Form an orderly queue.

2.) Daft Hands

What reading weeks were made for. Take ten dextrous digits, a lyrically recurrent tune, lots and lots of practise and voila. Simply amazing.

4.) Billy’s Balls

If it’s testicles you’re after, then you’d better try elsewhere. But not before watching this little gem of a video, because these are ping-pong balls as you’ve never seen them before. Yes, including that time when you were drunk in Thailand.

5.) Freehand circle drawing

This man has the most sex of any man on the planet due to the unique gift he displays in this video. That is either true, or a complete fabrication. You decide. Either way, this is quite a trick. And the ladies LOVE IT. Maybe…

7.) Facebook

No attempt to capture the current student zeitgeist would be complete without mentioning the F-word. Facebook is as much a part of university these days as library fines and being sick in your partner’s bed after a night on the tiles. This is a neat parody of the site.

8.) Diet Coke + Mentos = …?

As far as I know, both Coca Cola and Mentos are still allowed onto planes. Let’s hope no-one shows these mini-explosions to the terrorists. Or else we might all get a bit wet and sticky. But only if we’re sitting near them. Possibly more frightening is the thought of two thirty-something men with nothing better to do with their time than mix confectionery and fizzy drinks.

9.)The beatbox chef

This chef cooks up a delicious recipe using only his vocal talents. Tasty.

10.) Dancing prisoners

When they’re not stabbing one another with makeshift weapons, these prisoners like to dance. Well, they might like to dance. They may also hate it but they probably get a month in solitary confinement if they refuse to participate. And to think they outlawed doing this to bears years ago…

11.) Scientology is weird

As it transpires, ex-Hollywood-star-turned-religious-weirdo Tom Cruise is the least of scientology’s problems. Watch a few of the church’s less famous followers in action here. Does anyone know how you become a scientologist? Because it looks like a right laugh.

Let’s face it, Fresher’s Week – and the carnage that it brings – isn’t going to leave you a lot of time for ‘Quiet Nights In’. But for when the hangover’s raging, the pizza man’s on stand-by and you just want to snuggle under the duvet with your new bessies, here is our countdown of the top 10 student films…

10. Animal House
From the National Lampoon series, Animal House tells the tale of a group of misfit frat boys as they take on the social systems at college. One of the killer lines in this comedy great has a good chance of being repeated during Fresher’s Week, “Greg, honey, is it supposed to be this soft?”

9. GoodFellas
This Scorsese masterpiece follows the life of Henry Hill from a wee ‘un who runs errands for the New York mafia, to a grown man rising through the ranks of the mob. With violence aplenty, this film will separate the men from the boys.

8. The Breakfast Club
Five teens fulfilling typical high school stereotypes – jock, princess, geek, weirdo  and thug (no it’s not the Spice Girls) – meet at detention and pour their hearts out. Ok, sounds a bit rubbish but this quintessential 80s teen fare is a good ‘un and features the likes of a young Emilio Estevez and Molly Ringwald.

7. Porkies
Porkies is a good old coming– of –age film which charts the highs and lows of a bunch of high school kids wading through the sticky jungle of sex and puberty. Don’t repeat our recommendation unless you want the title of Campus Pervert.

6. Apocalypse Now
Coppola’s Vietnam epic has been a fave amongst students since the days when anti-war campaigning meant more than just joining a facebook group. With its strange synthesizer music and dreamlike scenes of war, you’ll emerge from the experience impressed and confused.

5. Anchorman
Whilst it’s unadvisable to use Ron Burgundy’s pulling tricks on the ladies at your university, this comedy legend about a team of (sexist) anchormen and their fight to win the ratings battle with a rival news station will give you the best insults since “ya mum”.

4. This is Spinal Tap
With a character who’s named after the patron saint of quality footwear, you know something’s up. Spinal Tap blurs the boundaries between reality and er…un-reality in this rockumentary about a fictional rock band touring the USA.

3. Napoleon Dynamite
Every school has a freaky kid, and this is the story of Napoleon, aforementioned kid.  The film follows Napoleon, the white dude with a ‘fro to rival Diana Ross, and his friends, Pedro and Deb through school. Proving white men can dance, ND is one for the underdogs.

2. Reservoir Dogs
Tarantino’s movie debut never disappoints. And frankly, if you haven’t already seen it, what have you been doing? Set in the aftermath of a bungled robbery, Tarantino uses flashbacks to take us back in time and introduce us to the infamous colour coded comrades and their crime.

1. Withnail and I
This 80s cult comedy tells the tale of two alcoholic actors and their holiday escapades. Little do you realise it, but Withnail will soon provide you with your staple of student catchphrases like, “I must have some booze, I demand to have some booze” and “I feel like a pig shat in my head.”
